My name is Chris Harris and I am the designer, baker, and decorator here at Custom Cakes in Portland, Maine. I grew up and attended Portland schools, and it is currently where I reside with my wife and children. After graduating from USM with a Business degree, I decided to pursue a career in art, which I had always excelled in. I worked in the field for 3 years before opening and successfully maintaining my own retail art business for 10 years in New Jersey. Throughout my life I have also had a passion for cooking, and have enjoyed making friends and family happy through the pleasures of food.  Additionally, I have had experience working in and running commercial kitchens, and have been making our kids' birthday cakes for years.

After moving back to Portland with my family in 2002, my wife and I came to the conclusion that custom sculpted cakes were a great way to combine my two areas of expertise. The cakes we specialize in are covered with fondant and can be made to resemble almost anything your imagination can conceive. This style of hand-sculpted cake and sugar work has been gaining popularity on television and brings the idea of cake as a party centerpiece to a whole new level. There are endless possibilities as to what can be created, from beautiful floral wedding cakes or anniversary cakes, to whimsical birthday cakes or special event cakes. We are able to use many different flavor combinations of cake covered with rich buttercream frosting underneath the edible fondant exterior. My goal is to impress my clients and their guests with the appearance of our cakes as well as with the taste, as I take pride in my work both as an artist and a baker.
